Sobre todo or sobretodo? A space that changes the meaning
Use sobre todo for especially and recognise sobretodo as a coat. Examples, message editing and exercises with explanations for everyday Spanish.
You are writing to a Spanish teacher: Quiero mejorar mi español, sobre todo al hablar. You want to improve your Spanish, especially when speaking. There is a tiny spelling decision inside that very ordinary sentence: should sobre todo be one word or two? For this meaning, keep the space. You can use the expression in messages, conversations and emails without needing a complicated grammar explanation first.
The joined form, sobretodo, also exists, but it names a coat. Knowing that both spellings are real explains why a spellchecker may leave the wrong one untouched. This guide gives you a meaning check, examples you can adapt and practice that moves from choosing a spelling to writing your own message. The aim is to make the decision quickly when you actually need it.
The distinction in one sentence
Write sobre todo when you mean “especially”, “mainly” or “above all”. Write sobretodo when you mean the garment. FundéuRAE explains this spelling distinction. In the examples below, you will see the two meanings inside complete sentences rather than as isolated vocabulary.
Me interesa sobre todo el horario means that the timetable is the part you particularly want to know about. Dejé el sobretodo en el armario means that you left the overcoat in the wardrobe. The first sentence directs attention towards a priority. The second tells somebody where a physical object is. That difference is much more useful than trying to remember which spelling looks more familiar on a screen.
You do not need to use the coat word in everyday conversation to learn this rule. The familiar word abrigo can still be part of your clothing vocabulary. You mainly need to recognise why the joined spelling cannot do the job of “especially”.
Use the replacement check before counting words
Try replacing the expression with especialmente. Start with Me gustan los paseos, sobre todo por la mañana. The sentence says that you enjoy walks, particularly in the morning. Me gustan los paseos, especialmente por la mañana preserves that meaning. The space belongs in the original version.
Now try El sobretodo está en la silla. Substituting especialmente leaves you with a sentence that no longer names the thing on the chair. Ask “What is on the chair?” and the answer is a garment. The noun is the relevant choice here.
This is a meaning check, not a ritual to perform mechanically. Read the whole sentence, understand what the speaker is doing and then try the substitution. If you only inspect the two words immediately around the gap, you may miss the actual message. Once the distinction feels familiar, you can make the decision without explicitly translating into English.
Notice what you are emphasising
The expression becomes more useful when you attach it to a specific detail. Compare Quiero practicar español with Quiero practicar español, sobre todo por teléfono. The second sentence tells the listener which situation matters most to you. A teacher or conversation partner can respond to a concrete need instead of guessing what “more practice” means.
Try these original examples:
- Busco una habitación, sobre todo cerca de la universidad. You particularly want a room near the university.
- Me gusta cocinar, sobre todo los fines de semana. Weekends are the time you especially enjoy cooking.
- Necesito ayuda, sobre todo con este ejercicio. One exercise is the main focus of your request.
- Me preocupa sobre todo llegar tarde. Arriving late is the concern you are highlighting.
You are not adding the expression to make the sentence sound impressive. You are helping the other person identify a preference, difficulty or priority. If there is nothing useful to emphasise, an ordinary sentence without it may be clearer.
Read the object clues in sentences about clothing
Imagine a short description in a story: El sobretodo gris estaba junto a la puerta. The colour and location help you picture an object. You could ask who owns it, where somebody bought it or whether somebody has taken it. Those questions fit a coat, not an expression meaning “especially”.
Another example is Compró un sobretodo para el invierno. The person bought something to wear. You do not have to infer that from spelling alone; the action and purpose give you supporting clues. Thinking about the scene makes the grammar less abstract.
Do not turn an object clue into an inflexible shortcut such as “write one word whenever the sentence contains clothes”. Me gustan los abrigos, sobre todo los azules still uses two words because the speaker especially likes the blue coats. The sentence mentions clothing, but the expression itself is selecting a favourite group. Always decide what the expression means in its own position.
Edit three messages you might actually send
Asking about a course
Hola. Me interesa el curso de español. Quisiera saber más sobre el horario, sobre todo si hay clases por la mañana.
The question is about the timetable, particularly morning classes. It does not claim that morning classes are available. It asks the person receiving the message to explain the actual offer. Notice that the first sobre introduces the subject “the timetable”, while sobre todo highlights the specific detail. You can read the sentence aloud to check that you have not lost the main question.
Arranging a flat viewing
Gracias por las fotos. La habitación me interesa, sobre todo por la ubicación. ¿Podría verla esta semana?
You explain why you are interested, then make a clear request. The expression contributes useful information without turning the message into a list of everything you like. If price matters more than location, change that detail. Practising with a sentence that is true for you makes it easier to reuse naturally.
Describing a difficulty
Entiendo bastante cuando leo, pero me cuesta seguir una conversación, sobre todo cuando hablan varias personas a la vez.
This identifies the difficult situation: several people speaking at once. You are describing your experience, not making a claim about your official language level. A precise example gives someone more to work with than a broad statement that your Spanish is “bad”.
Keep punctuation connected to the sentence
A space between the words and a comma around a phrase are separate decisions. Do not add commas automatically every time you type sobre todo. Compare the compact Me preocupa sobre todo el horario with Me gustan los paseos, sobre todo por la mañana. The examples show different sentence shapes. The presence of the same expression does not make all their punctuation identical.
When revising, first make sure your sentence is easy to follow. Identify the main statement and the extra detail you are adding. If you are uncertain about a complicated structure, simplify it instead of inserting commas wherever you would take a breath. You can ask a teacher to review that sentence in context. Fixing the spelling does not require turning one short message into an advanced punctuation lesson.
Choose the spelling in ten complete sentences
Fill each gap with sobre todo or sobretodo. Before checking the answers, explain your choice to yourself in a few words. “Priority”, “particular situation” or “object” is enough. The purpose is to connect spelling with meaning rather than guess from appearance.
If an unfamiliar word distracts you, identify the broad scene first. A pocket, a hanger or getting dressed suggests an object may be involved. A reason, a type of book or a difficult situation suggests emphasis. Then return to the specific gap and confirm the meaning there.
Answers with the reason for each choice
- Sobre todo. The speaker particularly wants rest after a demanding week. Nothing in the gap names clothing.
- Sobretodo. Someone hangs up a garment behind the door. It is the object of the action.
- Sobre todo. Silence is the particular reason the person likes the library. Especialmente would keep that emphasis.
- Sobretodo. The sentence identifies the owner of a black coat. The colour describes that object.
- Sobre todo. Noise makes this a particularly difficult listening situation. The expression highlights the circumstances.
- Sobre todo. Timetables are the main subject of interest. The following sobre los horarios does not remove the space in the expression.
- Sobretodo. The person puts on an item of clothing before going out. Picture the action to check it.
- Sobre todo. Travel books are the preferred category within books. The sentence is narrowing a broader interest.
- Sobretodo. The letter is in the pocket of a garment. You are naming the thing with the pocket.
- Sobre todo. The speaker is particularly grateful for help with moving. The expression explains which help mattered most.
Correct the meaning instead of trusting autocorrect
Suppose a draft says Me gusta Valencia, sobretodo por sus parques. The word processor may recognise sobretodo as a valid word. That does not make it the right word here. The sentence is about why you like the city, so revise it to Me gusta Valencia, sobre todo por sus parques.
Now imagine He dejado mi sobre todo en el tren. The writer is talking about something left on a train. If the intended object is an overcoat, the spelling should be sobretodo. Better still, make the practical message as clear as possible by naming the object and describing it. In a lost-property message, details such as colour help more than displaying unusual vocabulary.
After using any writing tool, read the sentence for meaning. A dictionary can confirm that a word exists; it cannot decide what you wanted to say without the surrounding context. That is why a short personal check remains useful even when spelling assistance is switched on.
Turn the rule into one useful sentence of your own
Complete Quiero mejorar mi español, sobre todo… with a real situation: understanding a neighbour, making appointments or participating in a seminar. Then add one concrete example of what currently happens. You will have a small but useful description of your learning goal, written with the correct space.
If you would like feedback on messages like these, explore private Spanish lessons and use your example to explain what you want to practise. You do not need to collect dozens of near-identical sentences. A few relevant examples that you understand, edit and say aloud will give this spelling distinction a place in your everyday Spanish.
