Don Antonio era el portero del edificio. Trabajaba allí desde hacía treinta años. Lo sabía todo de todo el mundo.
Don Antonio was the concierge of the building. He had worked there for thirty years. He knew everything about everybody.
He knew every neighbor’s schedule. He knew when the mailman arrived. He knew what time Andrés went out with the dog.
In the mornings, don Antonio swept the entrance hall. The lady from the second floor always came down at five to nine. She carried bread and the newspaper. She waved at him.
— Buenos días, doña Carmen. — Buenos días, Antonio.
“Good morning, doña Carmen.” “Good morning, Antonio.”
In the afternoons, the kids from the fourth floor came back from school. They ran up the stairs shouting. Don Antonio shook his head, but he smiled.
A veces traía amigos. A veces traía pizzas.
At night, he watched who came in and who went out. The young man from the top-floor flat always came home late. Sometimes he brought friends. Sometimes he brought pizzas. Don Antonio said nothing, but he noted everything in his head.
One Friday, he saw something new. The lady from the second floor came down dressed up. She wore a red dress and high heels. She wasn’t going down for bread, that was clear.
— ¡Doña Carmen! ¡Qué guapa! — ¡Ay, calle, calle! Voy a una boda.
“Doña Carmen! How lovely you look!” “Oh, hush, hush! I’m going to a wedding.”
Don Antonio sonrió. Volvió a su escoba sin decir nada.
Don Antonio smiled. He went back to his broom without saying anything.
Later, he saw that the young man from the top-floor flat was also coming down dressed elegantly. Same direction. He got into the taxi with doña Carmen.
Don Antonio raised his eyebrows and smiled a little.
— Vaya, vaya — dijo en voz baja. — Esto no lo sabía.
“Well, well,” he said quietly. “I didn’t know this.”
