Mateo tiene seis años. Hoy va con su madre al museo del Prado.
Mateo is six years old. Today he is going with his mother to the Prado.
Cogen el metro en Cuatro Caminos.
They take the metro at Cuatro Caminos.
Mateo sabe leer desde marzo. Le gusta leer todo en voz alta.
Mateo has been able to read since March. He likes reading everything aloud.
— ¡Bil-bao! — dice cuando paran en Bilbao.
— Bil-bao! — he says when they stop at Bilbao.
Una señora mayor sonríe.
An elderly lady smiles.
— ¡Tri-bu-nal! — dice en la siguiente parada.
— Tri-bu-nal! — he says at the next stop.
Su madre le da la mano. La gente del vagón los mira.
His mother takes his hand. The people in the carriage look at them.
— ¡Gran Vía! — Mateo lee muy fuerte. — Más bajo, hijo — dice su madre. — Vale.
— Gran Vía! — Mateo reads very loudly. — Quieter, love — says his mother. — OK.
Pero Mateo no puede. Quiere leer todo. Los carteles, los anuncios, los nombres de las paradas.
But Mateo cannot. He wants to read everything. The signs, the adverts, the names of the stops.
— ¡Sol!
— Sol!
El vagón está lleno. Todos sonríen. Un señor mira a Mateo por encima del periódico.
The carriage is full. Everybody smiles. A man looks at Mateo over his newspaper.
— Joven, ¿qué estación viene ahora? — ¡Tirso de Mo-li-na!
— Young man, which station is next? — Tir-so de Mo-li-na!
El señor baja el periódico y mira el plano del metro.
The man lowers his newspaper and looks at the metro map.
— Tienes razón. Gracias.
— You are right. Thank you.
En Estación del Arte, Mateo y su madre bajan. Antes de salir, Mateo dice una cosa más:
At Estación del Arte, Mateo and his mother get off. Before they leave, Mateo says one more thing:
— ¡Es-ta-ción del Ar-te!
— Es-ta-ción del Ar-te!
Su madre sonríe.
His mother smiles.
— Mateo, eres un altavoz.
— Mateo, you are a loudspeaker.
— Sí — dice Mateo. — Soy un altavoz que lee.
— Yes — says Mateo. — I am a loudspeaker that reads.
