Carlos era un hombre muy ocupado. Tenía una empresa de software en Barcelona. Trabajaba doce horas al día. Y siempre decía la misma frase.
Carlos was a very busy man. He had a software company in Barcelona. He worked twelve hours a day. And he always said the same sentence.
— Yo nunca duermo la siesta. Eso es para los abuelos.
“I never take a siesta. That’s for grandpas.”
Su mujer se reía. Sus empleados se reían también. Pero Carlos lo decía en serio.
His wife laughed. His employees laughed too. But Carlos meant it.
— En España trabajamos como en cualquier sitio. La siesta es un mito.
“In Spain we work like anywhere else. The siesta is a myth.”
Tomaron vino. Hablaron de un contrato importante. Hacía mucho calor.
On a Tuesday in July, Carlos went out for lunch with a new client. They ate paella at a restaurant. They drank wine. They talked about an important contract. It was very hot.
After lunch, the client went to his hotel. Carlos returned to his office. It was four in the afternoon.
Se sentó delante del ordenador. Tenía treinta correos sin leer. Abrió el primero.
He sat down in front of the computer. He had thirty unread emails. He opened the first one.
Y entonces, sin aviso, cerró los ojos.
And then, without warning, he closed his eyes.
When he opened them, he saw something strange. The screen was dark. The office was empty. No more sunlight came through the window.
Miró el reloj. Las siete y media.
He looked at his watch. Half past seven.
— No puede ser.
“It can’t be.”
Llamó a su mujer.
He called his wife.
— Marta, me quedé dormido en la oficina. — ¿En serio? — Tres horas y media. — ¿Tú? ¿El hombre que no duerme la siesta?
“Marta, I fell asleep at the office.” “Really?” “Three and a half hours.” “You? The man who doesn’t take siestas?”
Marta se reía a carcajadas.
Marta was laughing out loud.
— No es siesta — dijo Carlos. — Es… una pausa estratégica.
“It’s not a siesta,” said Carlos. “It’s… a strategic pause.”
Marta laughed again and hung up.
The next day, at the office, nobody said anything to him. But everyone smiled a little more than usual.
